Mike Hethmon writes tough effective state laws for a living.  As attorney for the Immigration Reform Law Institute, Mike has helped draft dozens of important new laws for grassroots groups and legislators in states across America, from Alaska to Virginia, to help citizens fight the disaster of illegal immigration and 'do the job the feds won't do.' 

Mike helped write Arizona's SB 1070, and he is helping Arizona police associations and even a coalition of concerned Members of Congress stand up to the left-wing crazies, the Mexican government, big corporations addicted to cheap foreign labor, and-- yes- President Obama--who would all rather attack the good people of that state than work for real sustainable solutions to America's toughest problems.   Politicians love to promote flabby laws that just produce more waste and don't work as promised.  Mike knows how make real reform work.

Even while a law student at the University of Maryland Law School , Mike fought for his values and the rule of law.  When a young Christian medical student was threatened in 1997 with expulsion for refusing to watch porno movies as part of a mandatory "sensitivity to diversity" seminar, Mike helped him negotiate a moral alternative and continue on to earn his medical degree. 

As a public interest lawyer, Mike took on a major slumlord in New Jersey, and drove him out of business. Mike has represented young black workers and older American tech workers who have lost their jobs to illegal aliens and cheap foreign body shops.  Mike has helped defend small towns across American like Hazleton, Pennsylvania, who were attacked by the ACLU after they stood up against illegal alien gang crime and harboring.  Mike sucessfully defended an Arizona rancher who was sued by the Mexican government for detaining more than 13,000 illegal aliens on his desert ranch.  

Mike is helping defend courageous Sheriff Chuck Jenkins of Frederick County against a CASA-backed illegal alien attack.  Mike sued the Maryland MVA on behalf of 9-11 surviors who were traumatized by Maryland's issuance of drivers licenses to known foreign terrorists.  Mike has sued the Prince George's County Executive to force local politicians to comply with Maryland's open records laws.

Good government doesn't just happen.  It takes a certain kind of toughness to fight the special interests and protect the citizens interest.  

*  A Fighter for Sustainable Development in Maryland

Mike donates his legal services to fighting improper and illegal development that causes sprawl and harms the environment and our daily quality of life.  Working primarily for the Friends of Croom Civic Association in the Rural Tier of Prince George's County, Mike has obtained judicial review to stop or delay major subdivisions, strip malls, and improper spot rezoning,  until developers and local officials fully complied with our laws protecting the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay watersheds.  Mike has advocated for better laws to insure adequate public facilities investment so taxpayers would not subsidize developers, and relentlessly fought for consisten compliance with smart growth policies to mitigate the effects of sprawl.

Before returning to law school in the 1990s, Mike worked as procurement specialist, program analyst, and contractor for four federal agencies -- the Departments of Energy, State, Defense and US AID.  He learned how the system works, and how it can break down-- at enormous cost to the citizens. 

Mike brings a fierce sense of honesty and integrity to public affairs. While in Saudi Arabia supporting their Air Force, Mike uncovered a frightening corruption scandal that threatened to undermine our national security interests.  The Hethmon family became whistleblowers until Mike successfully brought reform to a vital foreign military sales program.   All governments are vulnerable to waste and abuse.
